Periodontics in Mississauga

Healthy gums are the foundation your teeth depend on.

Gum disease affects more Canadians than most people realize, and a lot of them don’t know they have it. It progresses quietly, often without pain, until significant damage has already been done. At Destiny Dental in Mississauga, we catch gum disease early and treat it effectively before it threatens your teeth and your overall health.

ABOUT THIS SERVICE

What is Periodontal Treatment?

Periodontics is the branch of dentistry focused on the gums and the bone that supports your teeth. Periodontal treatment ranges from more thorough cleaning procedures to surgical interventions for advanced gum disease, also known as periodontitis.

Gum disease usually starts as gingivitis, which is reversible with a good professional cleaning and improved home care. If it progresses to periodontitis, more involved treatment is needed. The most common non-surgical approach is scaling and root planing, a deep cleaning that removes bacteria from below the gumline. Teeth weakened by advanced gum disease may eventually require oral surgery or, in cases of tooth loss, replacement with dentures or bridges.

WHO CAN BENEFIT

Do You Have Gum Disease?

Gum disease often goes unnoticed because it isn’t always painful. These are the signs worth paying attention to, and bringing up at your next dental checkup.

Bleeding gums

Gums that bleed when you brush or floss are almost always a sign of inflammation. Healthy gums don't bleed.

Persistent bad breath

Bacteria below the gumline produce gases that cause bad breath that doesn't go away with brushing or mouthwash.

Receding gums

If your teeth look longer than they used to, your gums may be pulling away from the tooth surface.

Loose or shifting teeth

Bone loss from advanced gum disease can cause teeth to loosen. This is a late-stage symptom that needs prompt attention.

Swollen or tender gums

Healthy gums are firm and pale pink. Red, puffy, or tender gums are a clear sign of infection.

Systemic health conditions

Gum disease is linked to heart disease, diabetes, and other conditions. Managing it matters far beyond just your mouth.

Yes, and not just for your teeth. Gum disease has been linked to heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and complications in pregnancy. It’s a whole-body issue, not just a dental one.
Scaling and root planing is done with local anesthetic, so you shouldn’t feel pain during the procedure. Some soreness and sensitivity afterward is normal and usually resolves within a few days.
Early-stage gum disease, called gingivitis, can be fully reversed with proper cleaning and improved home care. More advanced periodontitis can be controlled and managed but not fully reversed. That’s why early treatment matters.
Patients with gum disease typically benefit from maintenance cleanings every three to four months rather than the standard six-month schedule. We’ll recommend what makes the most sense for your situation.
